COVID-19 Misinformation in Canada

COVID-19 Misinformation in Canada

The COVID-19 global pandemic is a complicated yet fluid situation, the elements of which change on a daily, even hourly basis. As such, many of us have become exposed to a bevy of content touching on the medical, physical, emotional, financial, social and political aspects of the virus. Unfortunately, not every message/story we read or hear about the pandemic is created equal. Different governments, media outlets, activist groups, social media influencers and comment section/message board warriors have different vantage points and agendas. Some care more about facts. Others focus more on scare tactics and encouraging distrust. Then there’s the faction who’d rather present fiction as fact, regardless of potential consequences. The point is misinformation is out there. Not everyone shares the same opinion of whom the greatest sources of misinformation are, but it’s important to acknowledge the presence of it. Recently, Statistics Canada released a report titled ‘Misinformation During the COVID-19 Pandemic.’ In it, we are presented with survey results related to how Canadians engaged with, and reacted to, pandemic-related information.
