Hayley Lowles' ex-partner Matthew Sargent was jailed for her attempted murder, after he attacked her in their home in front of their young son. The attack happened when Hayley's ex Matthew was visiting her house. He was planning on seeing their then-seven-month-old son for what he imagined would be the last time – he was about to hand himself in to the police for burgling Hayley's neighbor's flat. But instead of saying goodbye, he lost his temper at Hayley and became aggressive towards her. Worried for her safety, Hayley ran to the kitchen – attempting to lock herself in – but Matthew forced his way in, before punching her to the floor and – horrifically – smashing an oven door over Lowles' head. He then punched her more than ten times, leaving Hayley with 13 injuries, which included bleeding on the brain, a fractured skull, cheek, jaw and nose. Incredibly, Matthew carried out the violent attack despite their baby son being in the next room. Following the brutal attack, Hayley was (thankfully) able to drag herself down the stairs of her flat to the street, before collapsing in a pool of blood. Passers-by then called an ambulance, and she was taken to hospital to undergo surgery to her face and head. As a result, Matthew was jailed for a minimum of 16 years. His sister, Emily Sargent, 28, of Ascot Drive, Basildon, was handed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, for perverting the course of justice after washing her brother’s bloodstained clothes and hiding them in her home.
