For my full article on repression, read here: https://helpfulprofessor.com/repressi... Repression in psychology is a defense mechanism where the mind pushes away distressing memories, thoughts, or feelings from conscious awareness. This process helps reduce anxiety and stress by keeping uncomfortable emotions out of our conscious mind. Repression often starts in childhood. When we face experiences that are too overwhelming or painful, our mind protects us by burying these memories deep within. For example, a child who experiences trauma might repress the memory to cope and function in daily life. This means they are not consciously aware of the traumatic event, even though it might influence their behavior and emotions.
