With the other ranch hands busy, and Geddes heading in to town, John takes on more work on the ranch. Story John finds David Geddes talking to Abe about the amount of work to be done and a lack of ranch hands on duty. Geddes asks John to help his wife and his youngest son Duncan while Abe searches for some missing horses. Duncan is having trouble taming a Morgan named Jeremiah. John calms him down easily so Duncan asks for lessons on how to bond with a horse. John agrees but first takes Jeremiah for a ride to let loose some energy. After a lesson in the basics, John is asked by Mrs. Geddes to help with a foaling mare. John helps deliver the foal before getting invited up to the house for a drink with Mrs. Geddes. He politely declines, telling Mrs. Geddes that he is married, which disappoints her, and then he returns to the house. Abigail convinces John to take Jack riding with him, on a pony borrowed from Duncan. The pair go riding down Little Creek River before John challenges his son to a race home.
