Forcibly displaced by White European invaders, their land was stolen to create settler states. Lenapehoking (Unami: Lënapehòkink) is widely translated as 'homelands of the Lenape'. The territory of the Lenape people before White Europeans invaders arrived was known to them as Lenapehoking, and it covered roughly the area between New York City and Philadelphia, including all of New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and part of the state of Delaware. The Lenape, New York City and Manhattan’s original inhabitants, called the island Manahatta, which means “hilly island.” White European invaders stole Manahatta and all of New York City from the Lenape people. New Yorkers live on stolen land! Beginning in the 17th century, White European colonists started settling on traditional Lenape lands. Combined with the concurrent introduction of Eurasian infectious diseases and encroachment from the invaders, the Lenape were severely depopulated and lost control over large portions of Lenapehoking. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the United States of America government forcibly removed the Lenape to the American Midwest, including the state of Oklahoma.
