Here's another RE multiplayer spin-off that I wished I played during launch. Resident Evil Resistance was developed by Neobards and isn't canon, but takes place during the Raccoon City outbreak. You have 4 survivor players competing against the mastermind player. The objective is for the survivors to escape the map within a limited amount of time, while the mastermind does everything to stop them from succeeding to win. It's a really cool idea that works well with a bunch of Resident Evil mechanics and monsters. There's a bunch of original characters that all have their own roles, abilities and perks. The mastermind has a "card" system with meter management and can place down traps, zombies and even lock doors, or turn off the lights to slow down the other players. Tons of maps with different layouts that get more complicated the further in you make it. I was blown away by how much depth and nuance this game has, the potential was insane and the strategies are endless, but man... Resistance has a ton of flaws that will remain forever since this game is no longer supported. First of all, the game has no dedicated servers, the host is the mastermind, so you're at their mercy depending on how good their connection is. There's also a ton of balance issues and massive disadvantages if you're brand new. As you level up your account you can open loot boxes containing passive stats that can do game changing things, like having higher max health or simply doing more damage. The power creep is just too much. Your abilities also have alternate functions that you can tweak as you play and level higher, which increases your advantage. There's also no cross-play and a match will not start unless it's a full 5 player lobby so it's pretty tough to start a game solo these days. I think this game could have been huge if it was executed better, structurally it's well made, and if it released with more modern online features I think it would still be played today. We did eventually get a full lobby of friends and learned a ton about how deep this game goes, and it was super fun. Definitely a missed opportunity, wrong place at the wrong time.
