Del Shannon - Runaway [1961].

"Runaway" is a 1961 number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 by Del Shannon. Written by Shannon and keyboardist Max Crook, it became a major international hit. It topped the Billboard charts for four consecutive weeks and was ranked No. 5 on Billboard's 1961 chart. It was ranked No. 472 on the 2010 Rolling Stone magazine list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and No. 466 on the 2004 edition. "Runaway" was released in February 1961 and was an immediate success. On April 10 of that year, Shannon appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, helping it reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for four weeks. Two months later, it reached number one on the British Record Retailer chart, where it held that position for three weeks. On Billboard's Hot R&B Sides, "Runaway" reached number three. Del Shannon, born Charles Weedon Westover (Coopersville, Michigan, December 30, 1934 – Santa Clarita, California, February 8, 1990), was an American rock 'n' roll singer. In 1964, he was the first artist to cover a Beatles song: "From Me to You." His career declined in the 1970s, and in the late 1980s, he worked on a comeback album with Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra. There was also some talk of Del Shannon replacing Roy Orbison in The Traveling Wilburys after Orbison's unexpected death, but in early February 1990, he shot himself. His wife suspected his death was related to his recent use of the antidepressant Prozac. The album was released after his death under the title "Rock On." Shannon has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1999.
