In total, Fahrenthold found Trump had used $258,000 of foundation money—again, most of it from other people—to settle legal disputes. In another case, the foundation gave $158,000 to resolve a case involving a golf course. (That case involved an apparently rigged $1 million hole-in-one case. Seriously, read thePost story.) Separately, Fahrenthold found Trump had used money from the foundation to buy a portrait of himself (this is, believe it or not, the second case where the foundation spent money on a portrait of Trump) and to buy advertisements for his hotel chain. These cases are not simply distasteful and deceptive. They’re also potentially illegal. The IRS prohibits “self-dealing,” or using charitable funds to benefit oneself—whether that’s employing them to settle legal disputes or (as Trump also seems to have done) to purchase one’s self a signed Tim Tebow helmet.
