(16 Dec 2016) Authorities in Beijing, and other northern Chinese cities have issued a red alert for severe air pollution, and activated emergency measures at midnight on Friday. This is the first red alert, the most serious level, of this year, according to the city's environmental protection authority. China adopts a four-tier alerts system for air pollution - blue, yellow, orange and red. Red alert, the highest, is issued for heavy pollution which reduces visibility to lower than 50 metres.
