The title was originally planned as an alternative to F-Zero, released in 1990. While the latter was aimed at hardcore racing enthusiasts, the former was intended to provide a more casual multiplayer experience for the whole family. Therefore, the engine speed was significantly reduced, the randomness factor was increased by the track items, and the focus was on a clear split screen to allow two players to compete against each other simultaneously. In order to ensure that racing success and thus the fun of the game were not entirely tied to the established ranking system, an additional battle mode was developed alongside the generic race mode. This mode allowed players to compete against each other in a kind of virtual arena, each with three lives. Over the course of Mario Kart's history, this mode was continually expanded with additional gameplay ideas. Likewise, the number of possible players also increased to four (local) and twelve (online) per race. However, the idea of turning the originally planned title into a Mario spin-off only emerged during the development process. Whether the huge success was due to this or to the innovative and accessible game concept cannot be definitively determined. In any case, Mario Kart far surpassed its single-player counterpart F-Zero and, as of 2021, is stronger than ever, while F-Zero can practically be considered a dead series. After the release of the SNES installment, the series continued to evolve: Mario Kart 64 was the first game to offer competitive simultaneous play with up to four players, while Mario Kart: Super Circuit introduced local multiplayer without split-screen, and Mario Kart: Double Dash!! added the option to play cooperatively on one vehicle. The biggest leap forward, however, came in Mario Kart DS (apart from the less popular LAN mode in MKDD), when the game opened up to online play, paving the way for a dedicated online community. This emerged with the release of Mario Kart Wii in 2008, which many still consider the best installment in the series. While it was already possible to switch between various karts in previous games, Mario Kart Wii introduced a completely new class with motorcycles. These were lighter and therefore significantly more vulnerable to enemy attacks, but at the same time offered a number of additional features such as sharp drifting and wheelie boost, which made them significantly more attractive to experts. The idea of incorporating motorcycles had been pursued since Double Dash!!, but was finally implemented on the Wii. Together with the tripling of online races from four to twelve players, these features ensured enormous popularity in the competitive scene, while the intuitive motion controls provided a starting point for casual players of all ages. With 37.38 million units sold, Mario Kart Wii became not only the second best-selling Wii game, but also the best-selling Mario Kart game of all time, building a huge modding scene that is still active today. Is the game really as good as it was perceived back then, or has it lost its charm in the face of the newer 3DS and Wii U/Switch installments?
