Today we are led in praying Mass by Pā Peter Tipene and the faith community of St Mary’s Parish Avondale. It is the fifth Sunday of Lent. We are powerfully reminded through the readings today that God has done and will continue to do, great things in our lives. The prophet Isaiah reminds us that we are called to notice God ‘doing a new deed’ as we are called into the future. To make changes, to stop living in the past. We all know what it is liked to be judged by others as the woman brought before Jesus was, and if we are honest, we likely have at times judged others. Yet all of us, like the woman are offered mercy and compassion by Jesus. Jesus releases her and us from the past and offers us a future full of possibilities. Meanwhile the reading from St Paul offers us a great mantra to pray and reflect on in this last week of Lent “May I know Christ and the power of the resurrections”. We only have a few more days with Jesus before we enter Holy Week. Can we allow Jesus to look at us in the way he looked at the woman, to accept the mercy and compassion he offers, to be rescued from behaviours and judgements that my in the past have been harmful to others. Let us spend this week consciously glimpsing the new deed God is doing in us.
