Based on the 18th Century bawdy British song, "A Knave is a Knave", Oscar Brand's "A Guy is a Guy" was Doris Day's first #1 solo hit, this after she'd previously charted 15 times. At age 15 in 1937, Doris Day (born Doris Mary Kappelhoff), was a big band singer. In '45 she had two #1 hits with Les Brown: "Sentimental Journey" and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time". During the 1950s and '60s she was one of Hollywood's leading film stars. Before dying in 2019 at age 97, Miss Day married four times and had one child with husband #3, Terry Melcher who became a successful record producer. Her plans to be a dancer ended when the car young Doris was riding in collided with a freight train, which left her with a badly broken right leg. During a long recovery, she fought boredom by singing along to the radio, which is how young Doris discovered she had a fine voice. The rest is history.
