Nurses Decode the Debates: Sept 30, 2020

Ahead of what some consider one of the most consequential presidential elections our nation has ever faced, 2020’s presidential debates will help inform the voter on which candidate best represents their vision of the future. In a year that has seen healthcare take center stage, the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University is hosting a series of nurse-led panel discussions following each debate to decode what was said, the plans revealed by the candidates and how ideas shared could impact the future of nursing and healthcare. Moderator: Carol M. Musil, PhD, RN, FAAN, FGSA Dean, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing Edward J. and Louise Mellen Professor of Nursing Case Western Reserve University Panelists: Edward J. Halloran, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been a nurse since 1964 and holds graduate degrees from Yale and Illinois. Dr. Halloran was Senior Vice President and Director of Nursing at University Hospitals of Cleveland and a faculty member at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing before assuming his teaching and research activity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he continues as Chairman of the American Association for Men in Nursing and is also on the staff of Everybody Needs A Nurse. Linda Q. Everett, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAONL, FAAN, is a Visiting Professor in the Marian K. Shaughnessy Nurse Leadership Academy at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Everett is the former Executive Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive at Indiana University Health, past president of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership and a CWRU graduate. Marian “Mimi” Nowak, DNP, RN, MPH, MEd., FCN, CSN, FNAP, FAAN, is internationally known for her expertise in public health issues. Dr. Nowak is an alumni of Case Western Reserve University’s FPB School of Nursing and is an active member of the National Association of Catholic Nurses U.S.A., where she also represents the international arm of that group at the United Nations. May L. Wykle, PhD, RN, FAAN, FGSA, is Dean Emerita of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, where she is still actively teaching systems theory and chairs a development committee dedicated to attaining resources for underrepresented students in master’s programs. Dr. Wykle is the former President of Sigma International Honors Society and former director of the University Center for Aging and Health, and currently serves as a member of the board of directors at University Hospitals, Frontier Nursing University and Notre Dame College.
