MMA means Mixed Martial Arts, by name itself, is a form that is made by mixing many martial arts. It is a full-contact fighting sport that allows Punching, Kicking, Knee, Elbow, Grappling, Throwing etc. If we look it closely then only the name is new, this game is very old. In ancient Greece there was a sport called PANKRATION, which featured same striking skills similar to those found in modern MMA. In Greek mythology, it was said that the heroes Heracles and Theseus invented Pankration. And, in Olympic terms, first featured in the 33rd Olympiad (the ancient Olympic Games were originally a festival, or celebration of and for Zeus) in 648 BC. There is evidence of similar mixed combat sports in ancient China, India , Egypt, and Japan. Fighter started fighting with different martial arts practitioners since the 1800s. During the late 1960s to early 1970s, the concept of combining the elements of multiple martial arts was popularized in the west by Bruce Lee via his system of Jeet Kune Do. This is the reason, Bruce Lee is called “The Father Of Mixed Martial Arts”. In 1976, there was a match between Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali and Japanese Wrestler Antonio Inoki. After a 15-round stalemate it was declared a draw. This fight played an important role in the history of mixed martial arts. This match inspired Antonio’s students Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki to found Pancrase ( MMA Promotion Company) in 1993, Japan. The name was based on Pankration, a fighting sport in the Ancient Olympic Games. UFC, The Ultimate Fighting Championship was founded on November 12, 1993. Pancrase inspired the foundation of Pride Fighting Championships in 1997. Pride was acquired by its rival Ultimate Fighting Championship on 27 March 2007.
