Weekly BobBlast Issue 396 What a Mess! - Part Three Welcome Back to Another BobBlast! So you’ve painted a mess… Now what?? Looking back… my earliest art assignment was in 6th grade, making a Valentine card for my mother. I have made one every year since - and the annual project expanded to my family and friends. Now I paint images of Hot Air Balloons in the shape of hearts. It's a corny idea, but it keeps me busy in the studio. I find I do best when I have a project! This BobBlast invites you to paint some dynamic, light-hearted paintings, instead of falling into the usual, mediocre, common approach to painting another Valentine heart. Even with my heart paintings, I have a tendency to paint quickly - working on several at the same time. If I feel like I am tickling a particular painting, I start another! Two Techniques! The Mess: Step One: I make a loose, abstract mess over the entire surface, then I let it dry. For materials, I prefer Holbein Artist Acrylic Paints because of their full body smoothness and rich colors. Also, I paint on 300 lb Kilimanjaro watercolor paper from Cheap Joe's Art Stuff. Step Two: I paint the negative space around a Valentine Heart shape with a 2 inch wide brush, leaving the suggestion of a loose landscape at the bottom. Painting Loose - Wet into Wet: Step One: You can use Strathmore Watercolor cards to paint your own Valentines. I get mine from Cheap Joe's Art Stuff. Using Holbein Artist Acrylic paint, large brushes and lots of water, I stay with the basic shape of a heart and try not to fill in any details. This is pure-loose painting with color and water. Step Two: After dried, add your message, kiss it and send! Thanks for watching and go make a Valentine card for the one you love! We're Going to Guatemala… Come with us! Interested in hearing more?
