We’ll explore its origins, how to utilise it effectively, and even showcase a Squarespace website built with this unique style. Firstly, let’s address a disclaimer. Brutalism isn’t my preferred art style. As designers, we often work with clients who prefer simpler, cleaner, minimalist designs, especially for corporate purposes. However, we need to step out of our comfort zones and explore different themes to keep our web designs fresh and innovative. So, what exactly is brutalism? Originating from the French word meaning “raw concrete,” brutalism was first used in architecture in the UK during the post-World War II era. It was an affordable and efficient way to rebuild cities devastated by war. This minimalist approach with bold structures and typography has now transitioned into web design. In our Squarespace website example, we’ll focus on bold structures, minimalist themes, and impactful typography. We’ll aim to make a bold statement while maintaining simplicity—a bit of a paradox, but it works! We’ll demonstrate this on the Squarespace platform by creating a brief for a fictional events company using Vala, an AI tool. Throughout the video, we’ll share examples of brutalist architecture and its influence on web design. We’ll discuss using chunky, bold fonts and high-contrast colour palettes to achieve the desired effect. You’ll see how we create sections and add content blocks to build a visually striking website. While we’ve toned down the brutalism in this example to align with personal preferences, we encourage you to experiment and determine if this style suits your projects. Remember, it’s essential to consider longevity when choosing design trends, as what’s popular now may not be in a few years. We hope you find this video informative and enjoyable!
