In North Carolina’s Sandhills, crews are setting the forest on fire—on purpose. The Nature Conservancy and Burn Boss Alan Teed use prescribed burns to restore the region’s longleaf pine ecosystem, one of the most endangered in the country. With fire-dropping drones and decades of ecology, this is what saving a forest looks like.
