Karina Longworth Q&A with Richard Linklater | WAIT TILL THE SUN SHINES, NELLIE at AFS Cinema

Author and podcaster Karina Longworth of You Must Remember This joined us at the AFS Cinema for a very special screening of the 1952 film WAIT TILL THE SUN SHINES, NELLIE. The event was cohosted by AFS Artistic Director Richard Linklater to coincide with the release of Longworth’s new book, “Seduction: Sex, Lies & Stardom in Howard Hughes’ Hollywood.” The rarely screened film is a showcase for luminescent leading lady Jean Peters, who features prominently in the book as one of Howard Hughes’ many loves. In the movie, directed by Henry King, she plays a young wife who, when called to submerge her own ambitions in life for her husbands’ sake, instead rebels. As Longworth writes, “Throughout her time on screen, Peters is fierce and feisty. When Nellie gets mad, Peters spits out a rage that feels uncomfortably naturalistic, like a precursor of the type of acting Gena Rowlands would be doing under the direction of her husband John Cassavetes, in the 1970s.” The screening was followed by a discussion between Longworth and Linklater.
