Various exteriors of U.S. Supreme Court STORYLINE More than 200 protesters and supporters gathered in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, as the U.S. Supreme court heard arguments on a tough Arizona law that requires police to check the immigration status of people they stop, for whatever reason. Civil rights groups say the Arizona law, and similar ones in a number of other states, encourage racial profiling and ethnic stereotyping, while supporters argue the states are doing the job of a federal government that has failed to adequately deal with the 11 million illegal immigrants currently in the U.S. The US Supreme Court justices strongly suggested on Wednesday that they would allow Arizona to enforce part of the controversial state bill but will not issue their final decision until late June. "I feel very confident as I walked out of there that we will get a favourable ruling in late June," said Arizona governor and bill supporter Jan Brewer.
