This morning I led some members of the Lone Mountain hiking club on a hike to the Keystone Thrust in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The Keystone Thrust Fault is a geological fault created when the oceanic and continental tectonic plates collided. The older limestone layers were pushed onto the younger sandstone layers marking the fault line. We started our hike from the White Rock Hills upper trailhead. The Keystone Thrust trail is well-marked and affords views of Rainbow Cliffs, the La Madres, Turtlehead Peak, and Calico Hills. The trail passes Hogback Ridge where the Keystone Thrust fault is visible before dropping down into the Keystone Basin. At the end of the All Trails route, we followed the ridgeline to a beautiful overlook of the entire Red Rock Canyon.
