Learn the ITTF Rules for a Table Tennis Serve | JOOLA Basics

In this video you will learn the necessary ITTF Serve Rules which determine whether a table tennis serve is legal or illegal in competition. This is helpful to know for your own serve development, but also for being able to judge if your opponents are correctly serving. This is a big step from elevating your casual ping pong serves into fully fledged competition worthy ITTF rule compliant serves. Key points: Ball must be tossed 14cm or more (in the US they use 6 inches or the height of the net as a baseline). The ball must be thrown at a near-vertical angle (cannot deviate more than 30 degrees from vertical) The ball must be tossed from a flat palm, this means the ball must rest in the palm and not on the fingers or fingertips. Spin cannot be imparted in the toss. The ball must be tossed from behind the base line of the table, and the ball must also be struck there. The ball cannot be struck over the table surface. Similarly the ball toss cannot be above the table surface. The ball toss cannot start below the table surface. No part of the body can hide the ball from the moment the service action begins all the way to its contact.
