The Power of 3 | CREATE Expressive Abstract Art with Muted Colors & Texture
In this video, we’re going to create an expressive abstract art piece with muted colors and texture — using the power of 3. We’ll work with three colors (Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, and Naples Yellow, plus Mars Black and Titanium White), three textures, three layers, and three shapes to tie it all together. This “Power of Threes” framework is simple but gives us a ton of freedom to explore, experiment, and discover along the way — perfect for intuitive abstract painting. For the first layer, we’ll build texture with crumpled newsprint, cardboard, and Mars Black stamped with bubble wrap. Texture adds tactile energy to our surfaces and creates surprises that guide the next layers. This is where intuitive abstract painting really shines, because instead of starting with a blank, flat surface, we’re already responding to something alive and interesting. Using paint in thin layers lets earlier marks breathe through, builds atmosphere, and gives us flexibility to soften or glaze as needed. Finally, we’ll add three charcoal shapes to anchor the composition and give rhythm to the painting. Working in threes keeps the process simple but powerful. Odd numbers feel more dynamic and engaging, and this exercise trains our eye to notice how layers interact, how texture changes mood, and how structure emerges from experimentation. It’s practice in decision-making, observation, and restraint — skills that make us stronger at intuitive abstract painting. At the end of the video, I’ll share close-ups of this piece in different orientations, plus some other abstracts and floral works created this week using similar muted palettes and textures.
