Protesters Rally in Chicago against Gun Violence

Hundreds of people converged in a peaceful rally in front of a south Chicago church on Friday to denounce gun violence. The names of victims who have died as a consequence of gun violence were read on the steps of St.Sabina Church, whilst nearby, manikins wearing items of clothing that belonged to victims acted as harrowing reminders that violence in Chicago is a very real issue. Prayers and song honored the victims while, among the audience, many held photos of the loved ones they have lost in gun related crimes. According to data newly released by the city's police department, there have been 873 shooting cases in Chicago so far in 2015, 20 percent up from last year. Just 12 hours before the planned rally, three more people died and 16 others were injured as gun violence in the city escalated. Some protesters spoke about their disappointment at the government’s lack of action against gun crime and called for stricter gun control legislation to be implemented. "Honestly we are surprised at the laxed laws in our state as well as our country. Because there are too many crime guns on the streets, and we need action," said a protestor. "I am so disgusted with the violence that's going on in our city. I'm so disgusted with the politicians that we elect that allow these things to go on. I'm disgusted with the lack of responsibility and control they have on guns, on the streets, on violence," another protestor said. The so called “Chicago’s peace is our Selma” rally will continue until October. One protestor said it is time to cross the bridge and build a safer and brighter future in the community. "If anything needs to be done, I'm willing to do it. This cannot keep up, I do not to want raise my children in this type of environment, and I don't want to be raised in this type of environment," said the female protester.
