He will uphold the land with justice and righteousness. In his days Judah will be saved, Israel will live securely, and he will be a king who will be a righteous and wise man. They will call him by this name: “The Lord is our righteousness.” Therefore, behold, the times are coming, declares the Lord, when it will no longer be said, “Blessed be the Lord, who brought the Israelites out of Egypt,” but it will be said, “Blessed be the Lord, who brought the Israelites out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had scattered them, and brought them back to live in their own land.” Responsorial Psalm Psalm 71:2, 7-8, 12-13, 17 R. Our Lord, who led your people through the desert and gave the law to Moses on Sinai, come to redeem us with your power. R. Alleluia. Gospel Matthew 1:18-24 This is how the birth of Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But while he was considering this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet Isaiah: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel” (which means “God with us”). When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
