Oumuamua Mysterious object in space

Oumuamua. The Mysterious object in space. Where is Oumuamua now? Do you remember hearing about that weird, strangely shaped object that passed through our inner solar system in late 2017? It was the first object we’ve confirmed to have come from outside our solar system. And it was given the name Oumuamua. Oumuamua was discovered by Hawaii’s Pan-STARRS 1 telescope as it surveyed the skies for near-Earth asteroids in October 2017. Upon this discovery, observatories focused on the approximately half-mile-long object to learn as much as possible about it before it flew too far away to see. Oh, by the way, it means, Hawaiian for “scout or messenger from our distant past.” Oumuamua is the first known object of interstellar origin to have entered the Solar System on an unbound and hyperbolic trajectory with respect to the Sun. It has an unusually elongated shape and a tumbling rotation state. Strangely, from the looks of the surface, it seems to have a great similarity to those of cometary nuclei even though it did not appear to be a comet. And a strange thing is that this interstellar object had gained a peculiar boost of speed. This animation shows the path of 'Oumuamua as it passed through the inner solar system, and its location on Jan. 2, 2018, when it was last observed by Hubble. By then, 'Oumuamua had been boosted by 25,000 miles compared to where it would have been if only gravitational forces were affecting its motion. TRAJECTORY: Based on observations its movement seemed to be peculiar. Oumuamua has a small, continuous non-gravitational “acceleration.” Apart from just the gravity from the Sun and planets, something else was affecting the trajectory of ‘Oumuamua. Possible reasons: This acceleration could be because of jets of gas coming off the object. Such behavior is like objects we have already identified as comets. When it gets close to the Sun, the icy comet sublimates into gas, and this gas stream pushes the object along. When this outgassing happens, we can see it because it ejects large amounts of dust, which form a cloud around the object, called a coma, and a tail. However, with Oumuamua, we could not observe any type of coma or tail. Maybe ‘Oumuamua doesn’t have much dust left after its interstellar journey. Or the dust was too sparse for us to see. Or maybe the dust was much larger than normal, making it hard for us to detect using the less sensitive microwave or radio wavelengths. This is, of course, an unusual object. Unfortunately, no more new observations of Oumuamua are possible because it’s already too dim and far away for even Hubble to see. But when there’s one weird object there are probably more. Sky survey programs will keep an eye out for other interstellar visitors, and our space telescopes will contribute observations to better understand any more orphaned vagabonds traveling between the stars.
