Triple H defends the World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of WrestleMania XX against Shawn Michaels and the winner of the 2004 Royal Rumble, Chris Benoit, in a triple threat match. At the 2004 Royal Rumble, Triple H and Michaels fought to a draw in a Last Man Standing match, subsequently leading to the former retaining the World Heavyweight Championship. Later that night, Benoit, who was the first entrant, last eliminated Big Show to win the Rumble and earn a shot at either the WWE Championship (then held by Brock Lesnar) or the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania. The following night on Raw, Raw Sheriff “Stone Cold” Steve Austin revealed there is a loophole that allows the Royal Rumble winner to challenge for the top brand’s world championship. Benoit, a SmackDown superstar, appeared, and warned Triple H he will come after the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, much to the dismay of both Triple H and Michaels. Two weeks later, Michaels interrupted a contract signing between Triple H and Benoit, advising the latter he should’ve stayed on SmackDown to handle his issues with Lesnar and SmackDown General Manager Paul Heyman. Michaels claims his unresolved problems with Triple H far overshadows a World Championship opportunity, as he wants to finally have a score over Triple H in a one on one match. Despite Benoit acknowledging Michaels’ feelings towards Triple H, he refutes Michaels’ involvement at WrestleMania, leading to Michaels superkicking Benoit and signing the contract. The following week, after Michaels defeated Benoit, Triple H attacked both men. Stone Cold confronted Triple H, revealing the World Heavyweight Championship will be contested in a triple threat match at WrestleMania XX between Triple H, Benoit, and Michaels. On the February 23 Raw, Benoit and Michaels fended off Evolution (Triple H, Randy Orton, Ric Flair, and Batista). The next week, Orton and Batista defeated Benoit and Michaels in a tag team match. After the match, Benoit and Michaels attacked each other. The melee enabled Evolution to execute a 4 on 2 assault on Benoit and Michaels. On the March 8 Raw, Triple H made the proclamation the egos of Benoit and Michaels will be too much at WrestleMania, which will give Triple H the advantage he needs to walk out of New York City still the Heavyweight Champion of the World.
