Iowa weather LIVE: Very gusty winds overnight causing potential whiteout conditions for some Iowans

Join us for a live conversation with Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Jon Rivas talking about chances for snow this weekend. I'll also be answering your weather-related questions. We are about to enter a very active weather pattern which will lead to potential dangerous conditions overnight into Sunday morning. After todays warm cloudy day with highs in the 30s and 40s, we will be very gusty overnight. As a low pressure core dips south over Iowa, we will generate very strong winds. This same system will lead to some showers over the state for today and even some light snow overnight, but the winds will pick up around 10pm and for the rest of the night. Winter storm watch and wind advisories will go into effect overnight night tonight through Sunday morning. The strongest gusts during this timeframe will range from 50 to 60 mph which has the potential to break the snow crust and tap into the light and fluffy snow pack in place. This would lead to a ground blizzard set up overnight leading to reduced visibilities until winds calm down later Wednesday morning. Winds will weaken through Wednesday and we will stay breezy Wednesday afternoon. Snow chances will return Thursday setting up for our next round for some accumulating snow. This is shaping up to be a streak of 1 to 3 inches of snow for some Iowans where other areas will see little to none. The track and location of this is still uncertain at this time but will come into better focus as new model data becomes available over the next 48 hours. After Thursday, we will drop temperatures yet again with single digits lows and double digit highs. We will stay cold for the weekend with a chance for even more snow on Saturday. This has the chance for be even more accumulating snow for our weekend plans. There is still too far out to say with high confidence, but we will continue to monitor this as we get closer to the weekend. Full forecast: https://www.kcci.com/article/iowa-wea...
