"Not one of you believes until I am more beloved to him than his child, his father, and all of the people" (Hadith), and the Muslims know that. Celebrating the Prophet's birthday (Mawlid), if we look to it's origin, it wasn't present except after the three virtuous generations (first three centuries). It began in the fifth century and what came after that. There was no mention of it in the first, second or third centuries of Islam, and the Sahabah and Tabieen didn't have any concern for it. So Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthmaan, and Ali knew the time of the Prophet's birth, his emigration, and his death. They knew all of this, As-saddiq (Abu Bakr) gave a sermon and so he said; "Verily, our Prophet spoke in the previous year, like in this Jumu'ah" then he cried. Which shows you that they (the companions) knew all of these things, they didn't celebrate the Prophet's birthday, and they didn't make the twelfth night of (Rabi' Al-Awwal) for speeches, recitations, remembrences, raising voices (extolling), or reciting poetry. They didn't do any of this and they did not diminish the prestige or magnitude of the Prophet. There is no foundation that can be relied upon for celebrating the Prophet's birthday. Then the calamity is that some of the Sufiyaah get caught up into these celebrations and fall into great errors (sins) by way of their mystical chanting. They hold dances in the mawlid, I listened to an audio tape of the mawlid, all of it was pleasure, dancing, singing, beating drums etc. The messenger was far away from this and other than pleased with this, then in the last part of the night they believe that the spirit (soul) of the Prophet attends to them and is present with them. And that they see his soul and so on from their superstitions, lies and falsehood, and their poetry of shirk and calling upon the Prophet and request intercession from him etc. And the Prophet is free from all of this. Oh my brothers! Love for the messenger is following his Sunnah (way). Our connection with the Prophet isn't just one specific night, no! Our connection with him is every night and every day, in our eating and drinking, in our daily prayers, during our wudhu (ablution), in our walking, in our movements, all of it! Our connection with the Prophet and his Sunnah doesn't stop upon a specific night, for verily it's always there, forever. May Allah's blessings be upon him.
