Here at Lantmännen we love great food! The Burgerfabriek in Amsterdam, which opened in 2015, is a perfect example of how to make some of the best burgers you can imagine and give you a fantastic casual dining experience. While traveling around Europe to find the best in the hamburger scene, it was only natural and a matter of time until we dropped by the Burger Fabriek. You can find them in one of the most international known neighbourhoods in Amsterdam “The red light district”. This is an area full of history and controversy, which has been changing rapidly over the last years, evolving into an eclectic mixture of local flavours and foreign cultures, where past and tradition, meet future and avant-garde. From its beginning in 2015, the concept of Burger Fabriek has been a combination of old essence in a contemporary suit. “We come back to basics: fresh, fast, flavourful food pimped with a modern twist. Well, of course, what makes a great hamburger varies from person to person and even when Burger Fabriek started up in 2015, they didn’t want to be just another fast food burger joint. When they started up, it took a while before everyone realized they weren’t just another new hamburger place that popped up. However, after they opened, this all changed: Burger Fabriek has been a hamburger-hit from the start! One of the many reasons for this, apart from serving some of the best burgers both in 2015 when they started but also now, has been things like the trendy interior of the place, or the concept that the beer tabs are on the individual tables! This way, no one has to stand in line to get a drink, and whenever you drink your beer, it’s always fresh from tab, just as you like it. The burger has come a long way throughout history, to the point that Burger Fabriek opened in 2015. Did you know that hamburgers have existed for almost 150 years? The term hamburger originally derives from Hamburg, Germany's second largest city. In High German, Burg means "fortified settlement" or "fortified refuge" and is a widespread component of place names. Hamburger in German is the demonym of Hamburg, similar to frankfurter and wiener, names for other meat-based foods and demonyms of the cities of Frankfurt and Vienna (Wien), respectively. There have been many claims about the origin of the hamburger. There is a reference to a "Hamburg steak" as early as 1884 in the Boston Journal. On July 5, 1896, the Chicago Daily Tribune made a highly specific claim regarding a "hamburger sandwich" in an article about a "Sandwich Car": "A distinguished favourite, only five cents, is Hamburger steak sandwich, the meat for which is kept ready in small patties and 'cooked while you wait' on the gasoline range."
