Gravity, which allows jumping from one planet to another when they are close enough, plays a major role once again. This has been further expanded, enabling new types of levels. Additionally, it's now possible to ride the dinosaur Yoshi, who assists Mario with various abilities. For example, Yoshi can use his tongue to swing across gaps or eat fruit that grants him different powers, such as increased running speed. Changing Yoshi's color unlocks the following abilities: Green Yoshi (normal abilities), Red Yoshi (speed), Blue Yoshi (flying ability), Yellow Yoshi (light ability in the dark; without it, Mario falls into the void). While riding Yoshi, a red indicator signals that you can now control his tongue, allowing you to, for example, "shoot" it at a specific location. This can be used to swing across gaps, pull objects out, or swallow enemies. Level selection is handled via a simple map screen, similar to the one found in New Super Mario Bros. However, there is also a central world, designed to resemble Mario's head, which allows you to navigate between the individual levels on the map. This world is constantly expanded as you unlock new abilities. Super Mario Galaxy 2 also includes a help function similar to the one in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. With this optional feature, the computer takes over control of the character and completes the level for you if you are having difficulty. However, completing the level only awards a bronze star, forcing you to complete it yourself to earn the full star. Additionally, there are several monitors (hint channels) that provide the player with tips on how to solve the levels.
