Miami Dolphins News - Butch Barry Is New Offensive Line Coach #butchbarry #mikemcdaniel #miamidolphins Is it the right move? Orlovsky is 100% right. Without an offensive line that can make the running game efficient, the Miami Dolphins will be looking at a bleak year. With the Dolphins hiring Butch Barry as the new offensive line coach, perhaps they are making strides to address this. Butch Barry, Matt Applebaum or whoever, the bottomline is without the right players on the field, the offense will be in trouble. Butch Barry formerly coached the offensive line for the Denver Broncos and he also coached the offensive line for the Miami Hurricanes. The Dolphins haven't had much luck with offensive line coaching as they have had a different coach in each of the last 5 years! Recently there's been a lot of chatter about Butch Barry, with most of it being bad. Allegedly former players him…text messages flying around…a lot of negative stuff. Don't worry about any of that! As a former offensive lineman, I'll tell you why… No offensive line coach will succeed if he doesn't know the system If you don't know the system then you can't put the right players in place. And no offensive line coach will succeed if he doesn’t have the right players to execute his scheme. I was a center. I benched close to 600 pounds. I squatted over 800 pounds. If I was blocking for the run game, you were in trouble. I could manhandle you and knock your d**k in the dirt. However, my weakness was on the passing plays. If it was a passing play, I was in trouble. If I couldn't get my hands on you, I couldn't catch you. I wasn't slow, but I was built to pound you. No offensive line coach was ever going to fix that. Same with the Dolphins, with McDaniel's offense, the line has to be more mobile than pounding. It requires a wide-zone blocking scheme. You have to have the right players or you're going to have problems. I think you're going to see the Miami Dolphins make quite a few free agency moves come March. If I'm Chris Grier, I want an offensive line coach who can assess players and tell me who I need to get in the locker room. If Butch Barry can watch film and assess the guys this offense needs to succeed, the Dolphins will be fine. All year long I could tell that Matt Applebaum couldn't do that. This past season's offensive line wasn't made up of necessarily bad players, but rather they were badly positioned for this offense. But here's the big reason to think Butch Barry was a good hire. People are looking at his Denver Broncos line stats. That team was a nightmare. Ignore that. BTW…if those text messages are real, you can also see the character of those guys. I wouldn’t want people like that on my team. Side Note: Do you not think Vic Fangio and Bradley Chubb were asked for some insight into what was going on in Denver? But I digress. So back to what I was saying… A truer picture emerges when you look at Butch Barry's job BEFORE Denver. Guess where he was before that? Yup…he was working in San Francisco with none other than Mike McDaniel. And as an o-line assistant coach he managed..yup you guessed it….a wide-zone blocking scheme. Which incidentally, as I mentioned, is what the Miami Dolphins are running. During the 2021 season, Butch Barry coached on the staff of the San Francisco 49ers with Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel. So you know coming from the Shanahan tree, he’s well versed in running the wide-zone scheme. In closing, I have a question for you… Remember this…Mike McDaniel is now going into year 2. As with any employee who is judged on performance, he knows he's on somewhat of a hot seat. He has to win this year. Not saying he has to win the Super Bowl, but 9-8 ain’t gonna cut it next year. He knows that. Since he obviously knows that, don't you think he's going to bring in the best players and coaches he can get? Of course he is. Oh, and one last thing. Mike McDaniel obviously knows his fortunes are tied to a somewhat injury-prone quarterback. The Miami Dolphins need Tua Tagovailoa to win. If the Dolphins are indeed going to ride or die with Tua, they better keep him on the field. If Tua isn’t protected, Butch Barry, Mike McDaniel, and Chris Grier might be looking for new jobs this time next year. I’m pretty sure all 3 of them know this. So I’m going to say this was a good hire. Because it has to be! ______________________________________________ How to contact Barry Cunningham ▶ Twitter: @barrycunningham ▶ Business Inquiries please text 954-804-9630 ▶Mailing Address: Barry Cunningham Fanfare Media 160 W.
