ISRAEL: FUNERAL OF JEWISH STUDENT STABBED TO DEATH IN JERUSALEM

(7 May 1998) Natural Sound Thousands of mourners attended the funeral of a 28 year old father of three on Wednesday, who was stabbed to death by a Palestinian man. Haim Korman, a Jewish seminary student, was ambushed and repeatedly stabbed as he walked to the Western Wall to pray in Jerusalem's old city. Only hours after Korman's death a Jewish setter in the West Bank town of Eli, attacked by a Palestinian man, shot and killed his assailant. Thousands of mourners gathered to pay their respects to yet another innocent victim of the bloodshed that continues to plague the Middle East. 28 year old Haim Korman was walking through Jerusalem's Old City on his way to the Western Wall to pray, when he was ambushed and stabbed several times. His body was found laying in a pool of blood, on the Via Dolorosa, the cobblestone street where Jesus is said to have carried the cross en route to his crucifixion. During his funeral on Wednesday, mourners wailed as prayers were said over the shroud-covered body of the young Jewish seminary student and father of three. Friends and family cried hysterically as his body was laid to rest, many still trying to understand why the callous attack took place. The Old City where Korman was killed is in a part of Jerusalem claimed as a capital by both Israel and the Palestinians. The fate of the area is to be decided in final status peace talks. But Korman's killing is part of a string of violence that poses a threat to ongoing Middle East peace efforts. The latest killings in the region do not bode well for the potential meeting between Israel and the Palestinians in Washington slated for Monday. Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, indicated on Wednesday he might reject the U-S invitation to the talks if the Americans try to dictate the terms of any peace deal - in particular the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the West Bank.
