The Hidden Mistake Behind Honda’s Early 2000's V6 Transmission Failures | Full Teardown & Analysis

Do you drive a V6 Honda and have had a slipping or failed transmission? Back in the 2000's Honda was renowned for having stout engines with transmissions as fragile as glass. Today I'm tearing down a 5 Speed Automatic Transmission to take a look at how it works and just why these transmissions FAIL! The "Hondamatic" transmissions resembled a manual transmissions inside, with an input shaft, countershaft and secondary shaft. Instead of using forks, they use clutches to lock the free spinning gear to the respective shaft. Torque is then transferred back to the countershaft which in turn drives the final drive at the differential. There are no planetary gearsets. In this video, a failed transmission from a 2006 Acura TL is torn down for analysis. The car had 200,000km and exhibited no movement when placed into gear. The second gear clutch was found burned out. This was due to insufficient cooling and poor filtration, causing the temperature of the fluid to increase and burn the clutches.
