VC Vinyl Community: Cheap Heat Field Trip to SloLow's Garage Sale (ABQ, NM)
Hey - a little change of pace for y'all. I went to the massive SlowLow Records Warehouse Sale last Summer (2022) & thought I'd find some LPs to talk about. Everything was either $1 or $5. Picked up a bunch of LPs for myself and my friends... again mostly jazz, weird jazz, funky fusion, weird rock... if you like those genres & sub-genres... you may not be wasting your time here. A lot of these LPs are cheap and findable all over the US... chosen based on my own tastes - your mileage may vary! Here's what I came away with (found many dupes to talk about - many were simply too damaged to risk a few bucks on) John Tropea "Tropea" - Really underrated funky fusion. I considered this to be too 'disco' back in the day. But now... well... i really like disco. But this ain't no disco. Innerzone Orchestra "Bug In The Bass Bin" - A nearly LP-length EP that is a bizarre mix of jazzy improv & almost drum'n'bass sounding stuff. Wonderful. Innerzone Orchestra "Programmed" - Tremendous 'kozmigroov' style jazz-rocker - Craig Taborn & Francisco Mora KILL throughout. Mwandishi vibes here. Martial Solal "At Newport '63" - wonderful jazz piano trio with Teddy Kotick & Paul Motian (Bill Evans' rhythm section) Martial Solal "Debut on Discs of Europe's Greatest Jazz Pianist" - More fantastic piano jazz. Guy Pedersen & Daniel Humair on one side. Sonny Stitt & Bunky Green "Soul In The Night" - funky Hammond B3 type stuff. Really excellent. Benny Green "Soul Stirrin'" - A Blue Note US Press in VG condition? Elvin Jones on drums! I'm keeping this! Eddie Daniels "Brief Encounter" - SUPERB mellow Rhodes-fuelled jazz. Even better than I had anticipated. Sugar Cane Harris "Cup Full of Dreams" - Great blues-infused instrumental jazz-rock fusion. Highest recommend! Stan Getz "Dynasty" - 2-LP set. Long modal jazz workouts with an all-Euro, all-star band (Bernard Lubat, Eddy Louiss, Rene Thomas) Capability Brown "Voice" - Nice prog LP - still not my thing, though. Turning Point "Creatures of the Night" - superior UK jazz fusion that sounds kind of like mid-70s Weather Report with wordless vocals Don Sugarcane Harris "Keyzop" - More great jazz-rockers. This time with all Euro musicians. Clifford Jordan "The Adventurer" - Pleasant post-bop / modal jazz session with the renowned tenorman out front The Sound of Feeling w/Oliver Nelson - Interesting jazz vocal trio does a nice job with psych-tinged originals. Teo Macero "Time Plus Seven" - Interesting Avant Garde stuff. Paul Brett "Earth Birth" All instrumental 12-string guitar solos. Leo Kottke-esque.
