Episode 36 of the Children's Literature Podcast: "Elven Music in The Hobbit." https://childrensliteraturepodcast.co... J.R.R. Tolkien wrote lyrics for many songs in The Hobbit but left behind no official melodies. Based on clues the text, what could his songs have sounded like? "Sing All Ye Joyful" was sung by the Elves of Rivendell using a poetic meter called dactylic dimeter, which fits in nicely with a 3/4 musical meter -- also called a waltz. The text in Chapter 19 of The Hobbit makes no reference to instruments and also says that many elves sing this song, indicating a mixed choir. You can find the sheet music for my interpretation of what Tolkien wrote at: https://childrensliteraturepodcast.co... Of course as a woman I was unable to produce the sounds of tenors and basses, but if any male singers would like to add to my rendition I would be happy to hear from them via [email protected]. I took the photos for this video around my home in the midlands of England, not so far from where J.R.R. Tolkien grew up. What are your feelings about how the lyrics for this song should be rendered? #songwriting #thehobbit #tolkien #jrrtolkien #middleearth #elves #elven #songs #bilbobaggins #childrensnovels #childrensstories #childrensliterature #englishliterature #childrensliteraturepodcast
