5 Month Old Golden Retriever Off Lead Training & Real Talk on Recall Safety

Welcome back to The Golden Bungalow! Takoda has officially reached 5 months old, and this month has been full of some big changes — both exciting and challenging. In this episode, we start with a full pamper session from a mobile dog groomer, giving both Medivh (now 4 years old!) and Takoda a wash, blow-dry, and some incredible scents. Clean, fluffy boys all around! We then head to the park, where you’ll see a huge milestone: 👉 Takoda is now confidently training OFF LEAD. We’ve been focusing heavily on recall, engagement, and off-lead heel — and you’ll see just how beautifully he’s progressing. Back at home, we dive into the month’s ups and downs. Takoda has been doing much better overall, but we still had a couple of setbacks — including a night-time accident in his crate, which turned out to be a bladder infection. A £150 vet visit later and thankfully he’s now doing great. And of course… it’s time for The Real Talk. This month we touch on something really important: recall responsibility and keeping dogs safe. We discuss: • Why dogs with unreliable recall should never be let off lead • Keeping your dog from running into roads or up to strangers • The impact of untrained dogs interrupting others • A real-life story of a man hitting his dog when he hadn’t put in the training • Why aggressive dogs must NEVER be off lead • Medivh’s shocking past experiences — including multiple attacks, one of which almost cost him his life at 14 weeks old • Why enclosed fields and recall practice are the safest, most effective alternatives Our goal is always the same: raise calm, confident dogs who can enjoy freedom — safely.
