Chinese authorities have detained activist and anti-graft crusader Liu Ping, her lawyer said on Tuesday (May 7). She is one of at least ten activists who have been locked up for calling on Chinese officials to disclose their assets. He lawyer says she is being held in Jiangxi province for trying to, quote, "subvert state power"—a criminal charge that is often leveled against dissidents. China's new leader Xi Jinping has made the fight against graft and corruption a priority of his tenure—at least that's what he says. Both he and former leaders have warned that if left unchecked, corruption could lead to the demise of the Communist Party. But the detention of those calling for measures to expose graft suggests the anti-corruption rhetoric may be just talk. Liu's lawyer, Zhang Xuezhong, says he does not know exactly why she was arrest, but belives it has to do with her calling on Communist officials to disclose their wealth. Liu has previously campaigned for women's rights and even ran as in independent in a local election. Zhang says officials denied him access to Liu on Tuesday. He was trying to submit papers for power of attorney. Liu's family has also not received the legal notification that she has been detained. Subscribe to NTDonChina ☛ / subscription_c. .
