At the age of 17, on June 12th, 2012, Joey Bada$$ released his mixtape 1999, a tribute to the “Golden Age” of Hip-Hop and the traditional New York sound. Influenced by Boom Bap, Jazz Rap, and Conscious Hip Hop, the mixtape featured a mix of original production and repurposed beats from artists like MF DOOM, J Dilla, Lord Finesse, and Statik Selektah.
