Russian President Vladimir Putin will be in New Delhi on December 4-5, for the annual India-Russia Summit. This is his first visit to India since the Ukraine war began in February 2022, after which the entire global politics around both defence and energy trade have changed. The meeting carries significant diplomatic and strategic weight, coming at a time when New Delhi is recalibrating its long-standing dependence on Russian military hardware while dramatically trying to also reduce its energy dependence on Russia. US President Donald Trump has made no bones of the fact that he wants India to stop buying oil from Russia and has slapped an additional 25% secondary tariff for the same. India says purchase of oil is a sovereign economic decision. Over two days, both the Indian and Russian sides will review cooperation across defence, nuclear energy, hydrocarbons, space, technology, and trade.
