(11 Jul 2022) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Washington -11 July 2022 1. Pan, David Schoen, lawyer of Steve Bannon, exits building and stops before microphone ++SHOTS SEPARATED BY BLACK FRAME++ 2. SOUNDBITE: (English) David Schoen, Lawyer for Steve Bannon: "Not much to say, really. We certainly got some clarity of his rulings today and the trial is scheduled for Monday. So, we'll be back Thursday for pretrial conference. And trial scheduled for Monday. (Reporter off camera: Do you have any clarity of why Steve Bannon wasn't here today? Why he didn't decide to come?) Because its purely a legal system, the rules exempt you. He's come in the past, but the rules exempt you if you want. (Reporter off camera: Any reason, any comment or thoughts on…inaudible?) Very interesting. I think there's a lot more to find out about that. That's all I can say. (Reporter off camera: How do you feel about Judge Nichols' rulings today?) You know, he's the judge. That's why they have a court of appeals. He's a judge. You have to respect what the judge says. (Reporter off camera: So what's next?) Prepare for trial. (Reporter off camera: Are you ready?) As I said today, I don't think anybody really can provide effective assistance of counsel on this kind of time frame. Finding out a week before the trial starts what defense is altogether permitted in the case and so on. But again, he's the judge. That's why we have a court of appeals. (Reporter off camera: How is Steve feeling?) I don't know I haven't spoken to him." ++SOUNDBITES SEPARATED BY BLACK++ 3. SOUNDBITE: (English) David Schoen, Lawyer for Steve Bannon: "Absolutely. I mean, I think, first of all, the great irony that Bannon had privilege invoked by the former president, he believed that that was valid. And I think the letter from the former president (Donald) Trump now makes it quite clear that he didn't believe it was valid. And so he's brought up on criminal charges now for respecting that privilege. But the members of Congress won't appear. I also don't quite understand how it is that the extraneous stuff. In other words, the statements to the press showing why they were after Bannon and all of that isn't irrelevant for the book deals. I mean, remember (Rep. Jamie) Raskin and (Rep. Adam) Schiff have written books with their conclusions already about what happened on January 6th. I think they have an interest in making sure that the committee's findings are consistent with that. Anyhow, that's all I have got ... I've got to catch a flight. (Reporter off camera: Do you think Steve Bannon's going to testify before the committee before trial next week?) I don't know. I don't know. He's certainly indicated his willingness to. Once his hands were untied, he stood on the same position that he said from the start. And from the start he said he's willing to comply if they just resolve the privilege issue, which he feels is bound by, which his lawyer told him he's bound by. Or they take him before a judge and a judge tells him privileges are valid for so-and-so and so on. Now that privilege has been waived, withdrawn. And so this perfectly consistent with that position. Sorry guys, thank you very much." 4. Walks away from cameras STORYLINE: A federal judge on Monday declined to delay the upcoming trial of Steve Bannon, an adviser to former President Donald Trump who faces contempt charges after refusing for months to cooperate with the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection. The rulings led one of Bannon's attorneys, David Schoen, to speak out in frustration as he sought clarification from the judge.
