[ISSUE TALK] Pompeo confirms trip to Pyongyang but raises eyebrows with pick for North..

비핵화 최대 고비, 폼페이오 4차 방북 관전 포인트는 - 고명현 박사 대담 Joining us now we have Dr. Go Myong-hyun from the Asan Institute for Policy Studies to talk more on these latest developments. Thank you for taking the time to come in today. Thanks for having me. 1 - So it has now finally been confirmed that Mike Pompeo will be returning to Pyongyang for his fourth visit next week. Negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea have stalled in recent weeks over the issue of denuclearization. What kind of progress do you think Pompeo will be looking to make from this visit? 2 - It comes ahead of a particularly busy few weeks ahead. North Korea is set to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the regime's establishment on September 9th. Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit for that. The inter-Korean summit with President Moon and Kim is expected soon after that. And then there is the UN General Assembly in New York where there are still rumours that Kim Jong-un could attend. How much does it complicate Pompeo's negotiations? 3 - There are also suggestions that say Pompeo's main agenda will be not denuclearization but sorting out the next summit between Kim and Trump. Do you think that could be the case? 4 - Alongside the announcement that he was going to back to North Korea, Mike Pompeo announced a new 'Special Representative for North Korea', Steve Biegen. We've heard a little about him in our report earlier, but can you tell us more about what we know about him, and what his new role entails? 5 - His appointment has raised a few eyebrows, and after Pompeo's announcement, the state department spokesperson was forced to answer questions on why he was chosen. Let's take a quick listen: "Steve in having served as the head of international relations for Ford Motor Company, as the vice president of international government affairs, knows his way around the block....... Does that reporter have a point? Why not pick someone who has experience with North Korea? 6 - The spokesperson also clarified that Pompeo currently has no plans to meet with Kim Jong-un. We all remember last time, he went thinking he would meet Kim, but then he was left frustrated after he left without a meeting. How significant is it that there are no plans to meet? Doesn't that suggest little will get done at these meetings? 7 - Another topic that was brought up during this press briefing was the joint liaison office that the two Koreas have agreed to open at the Kaesong Industrial Complex, north of the border. South Korea has said it would supply fuel and electricity to the office, and reporters asked Ms. Nauert whether this would be a violation of UN sanctions. She said the U.S. will, quote, look into it. This looks like this could a source of tension between South Korea and the U.S.?
