Except Thou Do Penance

Lent is coming. We are in need of reform. I know it is hard but it is needed. His Majesty cries out: “unless you shall do penance, you shall all perish” (Luke 13:3). St. Thomas explains that penance is a virtue, even the first virtue to be exercised by sinners after turning back to God. But also the great doctor explains that it is necessary for salvation in those who have sinned. We are sinners. We need to do penance. Lent is coming. St. Thomas says, “Penance opens the door to the other virtues, because it expels sin by the virtues of faith, hope and charity…” (III,85,6ad3). Letus go into Lent firmly resolved to stay the course and not attempt any escapes from reforming the old man. The door will open to more virtue… more grace… more faith, more hope and most especially more charity.
