The two meet and help each other out of various tight spots before deciding to work together... and even become friends to some extent. The game requires two players – either via split-screen in couch co-op mode or online co-op. There is no single-player story mode, nor is it possible to play alone with an AI ally. This is a deliberate design choice, as players will frequently find themselves in the same situations, but often from different perspectives. Depending on the specific story mission or situation, players may also assume different roles/tasks. For example, one player might need to distract a guard while the other sneaks past to steal a specific item undetected. In other situations, both players will need to collaborate much more closely to complete a task. For instance, they might have to help each other climb over an obstacle or work together to break down a door that one player alone might not be strong enough to open. Depending on the specific story mission or situation, players may also have to take on different roles/tasks. The game features a split-screen and cooperative online story mode.
