Lawnae Hunter suffered a severe stroke while on vacation at the Turks, Caicos Island. The hospital staff doctors discovered that Lawnae had a large, benign brain tumor that had been there for years and the pressure of the growing tumor had caused the stroke. It was a hard journey back to health with physical and emotional struggles and plagued with setbacks. During the time of recovery she had time to reflect and meet new people in the stroke community and became passionate about cheering on stroke survivors through recovery, and dedicated her life to the people on this journey. Her story is recorded in the book Just Say "Yes" to Life, where she describes having a small stroke TIA and was unable to speak for a few minutes yet she continued on with her daily appointments not mentioning the symptoms to anyone which had she gotten help would have prevented the massive stroke 30 days later. Lawnae emphasizes the importance for people to learn the signs of stroke and to lose no time going to the emergency room. Lives can be saved. Brain damage can be prevented. Lawnae Hunter is the Founding Board Member, Treasurer of Stroke Awareness Oregon. She is also Owner/Broker of Plus Property Management. Returning guests mentioned in this book are Marcia Moran and Keith Taylor both stroke survivors. Marcia Moran, Author of Stroke Forward suffered a stroke at age 53 and says, until it happens, none of us realize how frightening a near death experience truly is. She will discuss overcoming the hurdles of dealing with a brain injury, give insights from her story on how she took action for recovery with hard work, and perseverance to build new neuro-pathways, regardless of how stroke impacts you or others. She provides a Forward Toolkit, which is a compilation of different exercise videos, a recommended resource list and guide with her favorite lessons that provided her with the greatest impact on her recovery. Any patient with a serious brain injury looking for hope and insight into ways to keep moving forward with their recovery needs to see this show, hear first hand how Marcia thrived. Keith Taylor was proud of his purpose in life. He was Co-Owner of a multi-million dollar cabinetry manufacturing business in Oregon, and for nearly two decades he worked as its sales manager. Knowledgeable about his company, his retirement would be safe and his family financially secure. When Keith was 47, a genetic disorder called HHT (Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia) causesd a stroke that pushed his life's plan in a new direction. The first couple months of rehab were an uncharted journey , partly due to the fact that when he was discharged from Oregon Health & Science University, the staff failed to provide any of the rehab resources that could have helped him with mental and physical recovery. After a long recovery, and hard work in all areas of recovery Keith wrote the book Strength After Stroke, and developed a program to help others in the stroke community. His story and progress is uplifting and motivational to those who have experienced the ordeal of stroke. Stroke Awareness Oregon is a non-profit created by Physicians, Stroke Survivors and Community members and exists to eliminate disability and death from stroke through awareness of causes. Their team works in partnership with hospitals, community leaders, and businesses to continually provide stroke education and resources to the community.
