Philippines: Catholics' Foreheads Marked With Ash During Ash Wednesday

Millions of Filipinos will have their forehead marked with an ash cross on Wednesday to mark Ash Wednesday. This year the Catholic holy day happens to fall on February 14, Valentine's Day. A priest, minister, or designated layperson applies consecrated ash on the forehead in the shape of a cross. The ashes are made from palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year, christened with Holy Water and scented by exposure to incense. It marks the start of the 40-day Lenten Season in this predominant Christian country.
