MTBPS | SAFTU weighs in on the mini budget

The South African Federation of Trade Unions says it is disappointed that the National Treasury opted to continue with fiscal measures that choke the economy and severely compromise the creation of jobs and the provision of quality social services. The organisation was responding to Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement delivered in Parliament yesterday. The finance minister said in the current financial year, spending has been revised down by R21 billion, with proposed further reductions of R64 billion in 2024/25, and R69 billion in 2025/26. Godongwana said the budget statement plans to review the state, including public entities and departments, implementing cost containment guidelines issued by the National Treasury. An additional funding of R24 billion this year and R74 billion over the medium term will be used to fund the 2023/24 wage increase. SAFTU General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi joins us virtually.
