With only a lighter to guide their way, they push through the tunnels where Gaetano collects his hidden bag of money. Above ground, their ruthless boss oversees the workers with no mercy. After sneaking food—only to find nothing but bread—Enzo and Gaetano are soon forced back into the mine when tragedy strikes. Inside, they discover dead workers, a gas leak, and suddenly the tunnels erupt in fire. As the mine begins to collapse, Gaetano loses his bag of money and, in a desperate attempt to retrieve it, gets trapped and killed. Shattered and furious, Enzo blames his boss for the disaster, stabbing him before escaping on horseback. Just when it seems his fate is sealed, Don Torrisi makes his powerful entrance—rescuing Enzo and pulling him into the world of the Mafia.
