Thousands of visitors to London Olympics may get introduced to a different kind of English slang on the streets of East London, called Cockney. Traditionally, a Cockney is taken to mean a working-class native Londoner, or more specifically an east Londoner. These flamboyantly dressed figures in black costumes covered in thousands of pearl buttons are among the most recognizable Cockney symbols, often called "London's other royal family." Today, a network of "pearlies" across London dons elaborately decorated hand-sewn outfits to raise money for charity.
