Wide shot protesters STORYLINE: Egyptian police fired tear gas at thousands of demonstrators outside the Interior Ministry in Cairo on Thursday night during a protest against the apparent failure of the security forces to prevent a soccer riot that killed at least 74 people. Nearly 10,000 protesters, including sports fans, rallied to demand retribution for the bloody violence at a stadium in the city of Port Said, which most blamed on police inaction. The protesters pushed their way toward the barricaded ministry building near Tahrir Square, pulling away barbed wire barriers. The protesters hurled stones at police, who responded with heavy tear gas. Some protesters fell to the ground as they ran from the tear gas. A number of people were treated in a nearby field hospital. The soccer riots erupted between fans of rival teams on Wednesday night, causing a stampede in the stadium.
