Three Subphyla of Phylum Chordata 1. Urochordata (also called Tunicata) Notochord present only in larval tail. Adults are sessile (attached), and lose notochord and tail. Marine animals with a sac-like body. Open circulatory system. Examples: Ascidia, Salpa, Herdmania 2. Cephalochordata Notochord extends from head to tail and is present throughout life. Segmented body with muscle blocks (myotomes). Marine, fish-like, burrowers. Closed circulatory system, but no heart. Example: Branchiostoma (also called Amphioxus or Lancelet) 3. Vertebrata Notochord is present in embryo but replaced by vertebral column (spine) in adults. Well-developed brain enclosed in a cranium (skull). Paired appendages, complex organ systems, and closed circulatory system with a ventral heart. Divided into: Agnatha (jawless vertebrates like lamprey) Gnathostomata (jawed vertebrates – fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) Subscribe 'Crack NEET Biology' to learn the Biology concepts easily with focus on NEET.
